Stewarding What God Has Given Us
Skin Health · Identity · Stewardship
Melanin is more than pigment. It is protective, inherited, and sacred. A reflection on skin, pharmacology, and what it means to honour the temple God gave us.
Skin reflects factors such as nutrition, stress, environment, hormones, and lifestyle. Historically, it has served as a point of contact through which wealth, inheritance, and well-being are perceived — where biological inheritance and generational stewardship become visibly expressed.
As a Pharmacology student, one principle that continues to stand out to me is stewardship. Melanin, as a protective biological mechanism, responds to the body's environment. When overstimulated, increased melanin production can contribute to pigmentation disorders. The answer is not to attack the system, but to understand it and steward it well.
At CHEZ CONGO, we believe that our skin is not something to be corrected but something to be cared for. We advocate for the stewardship of melanin — and all skin — and stand against skin-bleaching practices that can compromise health in pursuit of unrealistic beauty standards.
Melanin is protective, helping to shield the skin from the damaging effects of UV radiation. It also symbolises our physical inheritance — a visible expression of the genetic legacy carried through generations. Just as we inherit physical characteristics, we are recipients of a spiritual inheritance. Both are gifts from God and, when stewarded well, become opportunities to glorify Him through our being.
Studying pharmacology has made me increasingly aware of the risks associated with some skin-lightening products, including the misuse of corticosteroids, hydroquinone, and mercury-containing formulations, which can have serious consequences for skin and overall health.
CHEZ CONGO exists to celebrate Congolese identity, culture, and beauty while fostering intentional, God-centred community. Part of that mission is encouraging women to embrace and steward the skin they have been given — not from a place of vanity, but from a place of gratitude, knowledge, and honour to their Maker.
Our melanin is protective. It tells a story of inheritance. It deserves stewardship, not erasure.
